November Insurance Tip: Protect What You're Thankful For

November is a time to slow down, gather with family and friends, and appreciate the things that matter most. As we head into the holiday season, it's also a great opportunity to make sure the people, homes, and belongings you're thankful for are properly protected.

Between Thanksgiving travel, holiday cooking, and preparing for the busy weeks ahead, a little planning can go a long way.

A few things worth keeping in mind this November:

• Travel safely this Thanksgiving. Whether you're driving across Corpus Christi or heading out of town, check your tires, brakes, and vehicle maintenance before hitting the road. Holiday traffic can be unpredictable, so give yourself a little extra time.

• Be careful in the kitchen. Thanksgiving is one of the busiest days of the year for home cooking fires. Never leave cooking unattended, keep flammable items away from the stove, and make sure your smoke detectors are working.

• Protect your home while you're away. If you're traveling for the holidays, lock doors and windows, secure outdoor belongings, and consider having a trusted neighbor keep an eye on things.

• Review your auto insurance. Adding a vehicle, changing drivers, or having a college student home for the holidays? It's a good time to make sure your coverage still fits your family's needs.

• Don't overlook life insurance. The holidays remind us how important family really is. Life insurance can help provide financial protection for the people who depend on you. If you haven't reviewed your coverage lately, November is a great time to start that conversation.

• Make sure your home is properly insured. Construction costs and home values have changed significantly over the years. Your homeowners coverage should reflect what it would realistically cost to rebuild your home—not simply its market value.

One last reminder for our Coastal Bend neighbors: Atlantic hurricane season officially continues through November 30. Even as temperatures cool and the holidays approach, it's important to stay prepared along the Texas coast.

I'm a graduate of Texas A&M University–Corpus Christi and a proud United States Army veteran. When I'm not in the office, you'll probably find me cooking or grilling, catching a game, or shooting sporting clays.

Giving back to Corpus Christi is important to me. I've had the privilege of being involved with organizations including the Rotary Club of Corpus Christi, Ronald McDonald House, and American Heart Association. I'm also proud to be part of CC Mustangs and a graduate of Leadership Corpus Christi Class 45.

Most importantly, family is everything to me. I'm blessed to be married to my wonderful wife, Jodi, and I'm a proud dad to one son at London Independent School District and two bonus kids at Texas A&M University–Corpus Christi. Shakas up!
